Healthy desserts to share

Desserts are a universal delight that can bring joy to any occasion. However, traditional desserts are often laden with sugar, unhealthy fats, and empty calories, which can wreak havoc on your health and waistline. The good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice taste for health when it comes to desserts. In this blog, we’ll explore a selection of delectable and nutritious dessert options that you can enjoy guilt-free. We’ll also delve into the benefits of choosing these healthier alternatives for your body and overall well-being.

The benefits of healthy desserts

Before we dive into the scrumptious recipes, let’s take a moment to understand why opting for healthier desserts is a smart choice:

Nutrient-rich ingredients

Healthy desserts are often made with whole, natural ingredients like fruits, nuts, and whole grains, which are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These nutrients support your overall health and provide sustained energy.

Weight management

Traditional desserts can lead to weight gain due to their high sugar and calorie content. Healthy desserts, on the other hand, can help you maintain a healthy weight while still enjoying a sweet treat.

Blood sugar control

Many traditional desserts cause rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling tired and irritable. Healthy desserts, with their lower glycemic index, provide a more stable source of energy.

Heart health

Ingredients like dark chocolate and nuts found in some healthy desserts have been linked to improved heart health by reducing the risk of heart disease and lowering bad cholesterol levels.

Digestive health

Fiber-rich ingredients in healthy desserts can promote better digestion and help prevent constipation.

  • ⅓ cup pure maple syrup
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder (optional)
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg for vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups shredded zucchini
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips, dairy-free as desired
  • Coconut oil, for greasing the pan

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8-inch square baking pan with coconut oil and line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. Prepare the wet ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the creamy almond butter, pure maple syrup, cocoa powder, kosher salt, and instant coffee powder (if using). Stir until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Add egg and vanilla: If you’re using a regular egg, add it to the mixture and stir until fully incorporated. If you prefer a vegan option, prepare a flax egg by mixing 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water. Let it sit for a few minutes to thicken, then add it to the mixture along with the vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Incorporate baking soda: Sprinkle the baking soda over the mixture and stir until it’s evenly distributed and the batter begins to rise slightly.

Strawberry sorbet

Treat yourself and your friends to a refreshing delight with our Strawberry sorbet, serving 8 portions, and boasting just 134 calories per serving. This luscious sorbet is the epitome of guilt-free indulgence, offering the sweet essence of strawberries in every spoonful, making it an ideal dessert for sharing on any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds strawberries, hulled
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • ½ cup ice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the strawberries: Wash the strawberries thoroughly and remove the green tops (hull them). If the strawberries are very large, you can cut them in half to ensure they blend easily.
  2. Make a simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. This will create a simple syrup. Remove it from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
  3. Blend the Ingredients: Place the hulled strawberries, cooled simple syrup, lime juice, and a pinch of kosher salt into a blender or food processor. Blend until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. Add ice: Add the half-cup of ice to the blender and blend again until the mixture is chilled and has a slushy consistency.
  5. Taste and sdjust: Taste the sorbet mixture and adjust the sweetness or tartness as needed. You can add a bit more sugar or lime juice if desired.
  6. Chill: Pour the sorbet mixture into a shallow container or a metal bowl. Cover it and place it in the freezer for about 2-3 hours, or until the sorbet firms up.
  7. Serve: Before serving, allow the sorbet to sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften slightly. Use an ice cream scoop or a spoon to scoop out the sorbet into serving dishes or cones.
  8. Enjoy: Garnish with fresh strawberry slices or a sprig of mint if desired. Serve your homemade Strawberry Sorbet as a healthy and refreshing dessert to share.

Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C).

  4. Incorporate dry ingredients: Add the cocoa powder, sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and kosher salt to the wet ingredients. Mix until everything is thoroughly combined and you have a smooth batter.

  8. Cool and cut: Allow the brownies to cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes, then use the parchment paper to lift them out and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
